Every time we step out in Kampala, one thing’s guaranteed —we’re going to share the road with a boda. For most of us, they’re not just a convenience —they’re a way of life. From quick errands and school runs to dodging traffic for that last-minute meeting in town, boda bodas keep the city moving.
But for too long, Kampala’s roads have also been dangerous, unpredictable, and, quite frankly, scary. Boda bodas have often been part of that problem until SafeBoda came along to flip the script.
SafeBoda was born in the middle of Kampala’s transport chaos. Untrained riders. No helmets. No rules. The boda industry was fast and affordable but dangerously informal.
We asked a different question:
What if you could get the same fast ride… but with a trained rider, a helmet that fits, and peace of mind?
That’s what we built.
SafeBoda has trained over 25,000 riders in Kampala. But we don’t just hand out reflector jackets our onboarding includes
And yes, every rider carries two helmets: one for them and one for you. That small step has led to a big shift.
Before SafeBoda, boda bodas were involved in 35.7of road accidents in Kampala (Uganda Police Report, 2023). Through better training, tools, and tracking, we’ve helped reduce the risk and rewrite what a “normal boda ride” looks like.
SafeBoda’s app isn’t just convenient — it’s your safety partner:
Plus, an in-app SOS button and a 5-star rating system help us hold riders accountable and improve daily.
When we started, many people in Kampala didn’t feel safe on bodas especially at night or when traveling alone. Today, things look different:
SafeBoda isn’t just a ride; it's a signal that safety is possible, and it's here to stay.
As Road Safety Week comes to a close, we’re proud of how far we’ve come — but we’re even more focused on the road ahead.
We're committed to:
Because for us, safety isn’t a campaign. It’s a mission.
Kampala deserves safer roads. It starts with one ride, one rider, and one commitment to professionalism. At SafeBoda, we’re not just moving people; we’re helping transform how this city moves. So let’s keep going. Let’s keep riding smart. Kampala, let’s ride safer together.
